Shady Angels Drop Sophomore Album

Single review / album promotion via Madison Imlay - @madison_imlay

Shady angels is a indie-grunge band located from Spokane, Washington that has recently found their way quickly rising in the music scene; consisting of Brayden Moore (age 18), drummer Jameson Sanborn (18), bassist Curran Chodorowski (17) and lead guitarist Owen Sonntag (17). Moore, Sanborn, and Chodorowski attend Lewis and Clark High School, and Sonntag attends Gonzaga Prep. Moore and Sanborn are in their senior year, and Chodorowski and Sonntag are juniors.

It was your typical story of high school boys who just wanted to play music and have fun yet in recent months things have seemed to take off for the band. The gigs rapidly rising in number as well as their most recent album having been released; some may call it a "finale for now" project as the members will be attending different colleges. Whose to say what the future holds but this seems like quite a grand way to leave it for now.

The single "I Am A Superman" off of the new album is what the focus for today is.

With its soft indie vibes, it grasps the listener into an emotional journey. While the direct meaning isn't completely clear, a beautiful thing about music is it's always up for interpretation. To me, the lyrics hit me in a very emotional and quite gripping manner. Lyrics within the chorus really hit me the most:

"Your pursed lips crack with every joke, with discretion you spoke, you don't want me to know"

To me, this is a story of someone who is struggling, more specifically someone who likes to hide themselves away; they hide their emotions from others, so their pain can't be seen. They hope that no one notices any difference so they can just glide through life without confrontation.

"I hope that you make me proud, I caught a glimpse of you just now. You alone in your old house"

This song comes from the POV of someone who can see behind those walls; who can see the hurt, the pain, the issues being shoved down. It almost seems like an encouragement to the person who is struggling; telling them that their "old self" is the better version. It seems very emotional because it almost emulates a caring friendship; one struggling to stay afloat and the other ensuring they won't leave and hope to see them get better in the end.

The song has such a deep meaning, at least to me, yet the softer instrumentals with the flowing vocals helps sooth that by putting the listener more at ease. The softer vibe allows for truly listening to the song to be easier; less focus on the background or what it sounds like and directing it moreso on the lyrics of it. I truly admire this song and cannot wait to listen to the full album.

Their second full album, "Try My Door" was released on September 20th, and contains 7 songs on it! If indie-grunge is your style, I highly encourage you to go give it a listen and interpret this single, and their other songs on your own!

The beautiful thing about music is you can hear it in your own way! Be sure to keep up with them on all socials for future releases and updates!
