SHOW REVIEW - The Thing With Feathers Live in Madison
Kylie Fajman - @kyliefajman
On July 17, 2024 at The Burr Oak in Madison Wisconsin. The Thing with Feathers play alongside Diet Lite, Fellow Kinsman, and Mom Rock, rocking out in the Midwest on their second tour of the year after a recent short Spring tour in March before the well anticipated debut album.
During a late show on a Wednesday night, they showed their crowd how to bring some Saturday night vibes to a week day. Opening the night with their single, Static, Dave Welcsh (Vocals), Alex Hendricks (Guitar), Chris Roussell (Drums), and new bassist, Jacob Emran (Bass), bring a new energy to the night before the main act. This new energy consists of an indie rock, garage band type sound. Later in the act, they showcase a new song, Miniskirt, which will be on the new album, expected for release next year.
As a friend and a fan, seeing their growth from early 2023, to over a year later, it is truly incredible. If the show is sold out or only a few people there The Feathers make sure to give their crowd an amazing show.
Throughout their 8 song set including, Lights Down Low, Golden, Figure It Out, Ready to Burn, Can You See Me, and Waste My Revenge, the energy is booming. Welcsh makes sure to include everyone in the crowd by holding hands, picking someone to twirl, or even jumping into the crowd to play his guitar. While Hendricks wows the crowd with his guitar solos.
Roussell brings out his drumming skills as an intro to the next song, hyping up the crowd to cheer and clap with him. It genuinely makes you go “holy shit they’re good”, even turning a few new heads to go and start listening to them after seeing their set as an opening act.
At the end of their set, you can always find the boys hanging around the merch table, excitedly awaiting to talk to their fans. Every show I’ve been to or even outside of shows, these are truly some of the most humble, kind, genuine guys who care deeply about their fans and music. Taking pictures, signing CD’s, setlists, and selling their merch alongside tour manager Dominick Sotis, who is just as wonderful. If you’re looking for a smaller indie band to support and see these are deserving guys.
I could write several pages worth of how great of a show they put on as someone who has been to numerous shows, traveling all over the country to go see them. But, I will keep it short and simple. If you are looking for a new, fun, indie rock sound, definitely check out The Thing with Feathers, they will blow you away with their talent. They are continuing this tour with Mom Rock, who also knows how to play a damn good show, in New York, Virginia, and North Carolina. If they are coming to a city near you, please go check them out or stream their music, you will not be disappointed. Even my own parents who were not indie rock fans enjoy their music and seeing them live.
