SONG REVIEW - COIN’s “Take it or Leave it”
Agora Wank - @agoradaydream
Fears are being broken and spoken as the indie pop sensation COIN comes back out strong with another single. After the release of their fourth studio album, “Uncanny Valley,” the Tennessee natives return to the plate with their second single off their upcoming album, “I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore.”
Coin fans have waited patiently as the Uncanny Valley era of the band’s career reached a close with a few final summer festival performances. Frontman Chase Lawerence always comes through with hard-hitting lyrics, leaving the crowds wanting more.
The brand-new single “Take It or Leave It” did not disappoint. It highlights the band's ability to intertwine emotional lyrics with a dance party-esque sound that feels perfect for your breakup or pool party playlists.
Take it or Leave it: A Review
The song focuses on falling in love with someone and not being reciprocated and having a hard time expressing said emotion. The opening line paints a rather graphic image, “ I wanted to call you / With blood in my mouth.” He finds himself trying to convey his emotions towards his counterpart without the ability to do so. I picture this as what Cady Heron describes as word vomit.
In the music video, guitarist Joe Memmel and drummer Ryan Winnen hang from the ceiling, headbanging and playing their hearts out. Lawrence is spewing gut-wrenching words.
“If you’re gonna leave me / Don’t go breaking my heart / Just tear me apart / Take it or leave it.” The singer is begging the counterpart to let him down gently
The song has a pleading tone while knowing this relationship won't work out. Knowing in the back of his mind someone else is with the person he’s after, “A missed call and a pretty boyfriend,” solidifies it yet still pleads for a gentle friend zone kind of rejection.
Though this all sounds depressing, the song's sound is anything but. It’s catchy, upbeat, and a solid start to this new chapter of the band. Coin has this incredible ability to speak from the darkest depths of a person's heart while still playing a catchy beat that makes you want to blare it out of your car with the windows down.
All together, the single “Take it or Leave it” (along with the former single “Strawberry Jam”) introduces fans to the new era of Coin and only makes me and other coin fans more excited for the release of “I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore” as well as their upcoming national tour.
